Call for nominations of experts and fellows for the monitoring assessment

IPBES is looking for experts and fellows for the monitoring assessment.

IPBES is undertaking a methodological assessment on monitoring biodiversity and nature’s contributions to people (monitoring assessment).

The objective of the monitoring assessment is to support national and global efforts to (a) monitor biodiversity, nature’s contributions to people and the direct and underlying causes of the observed changes; and (b) specifically monitor progress towards the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in support of a balanced and enhanced implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The assessment will also contribute to the monitoring of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals and other relevant multilateral environmental agreements, processes and efforts.

Nomination of experts and fellows

For the monitoring report, IPBES is looking for experts and practitioners. Fellows (early career scientists) with expertise in the following areas:

  • Ecology, evolution, social sciences, economics, statistics and modelling of biodiversity
  • Monitoring of biodiversity and nature's contribution to humans in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems
  • Use of in situ and remote sensing measurements, community-based monitoring and citizen science
  • New technologies such as environmental DNA, ecological acoustics, hyperspectral imagery
  • and artificial intelligence
  • National and sub-national monitoring programmes and systems (including those led by indigenous peoples and local communities), global monitoring systems and citizen science initiatives
  • Indicators and the use of indicators in policy and decision-making.

Information on the nomination from Switzerland

Interested candidates are kindly requested to contact the IPBES-CH coordination office (). After registering with IPBES (https://ipbes.net/user/register), the application form can be filled in until 19 December 2023. If you want to be nominated through Switzerland, please select the IPBES Focal Point of Switzerland, Dr. Sebastian König, in the form. The IPBES-CH Coordination Unit will then confirm your nomination after a thorough review on the web portal. Experts and fellows who are selected accept the relevant conditions, including the fact that the time they give to IPBES is on a pro-bono basis. If they are successfully nominated by Switzerland, the IPBES-CH Coordination Unit may pay for their expenses when travelling to official IPBES meetings.
