Call for nominations of experts and fellows for the “Second Global Assessment”
The starting signal for a second Global IPBES Assessment has been given, and IPBES is seeking experts who can apply by March 28, 2025. The first authors' meeting is scheduled for November 2025, and the report is to be adopted by the end of 2028.

At its 11th plenary session in December 2020, IPBES launched the Second Global Assessment of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services under the IPBES rolling work program up to 2030.
Scientific experts from various disciplines, professionals with specific expertise in political science and practitioners with relevant experience are invited to actively participate in the IPBES assessment process. Junior scientists (“fellows”) are also welcome; they will be invited to apply in a separate call. IPBES seeks experts with experience in conducting regional and global analysis related to the nature and contribution of nature to people in terrestrial, inland water, coastal and marine ecosystems. They should have expertise in one or more natural, social or human science disciplines relevant to the global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services. In particular, IPBES seeks experts with an interdisciplinary background. IPBES also seeks experts in indigenous and local knowledge, policy experts and practitioners in a field relevant to this global assessment.
Further information on the scoping report for the assessment and important information on the registration process for experts can be found in the call for nominations from the IPBES Secretariat.
The IPBES Fellowship Program is aimed at early-career individuals (“Fellows”) who wish to gain experience by participating in the work of IPBES. Selected Fellows work on a chapter, participate in authoring sessions and receive training to gain an in-depth understanding of the IPBES assessment processes and the interface between science and policy. In addition, the fellows will be assigned a mentor. Further information on the application process for fellows can be found in the corresponding call for nominations.
Interested candidates are encouraged to contact the IPBES CH Coordination Office at before submitting their application if they wish to be nominated by Switzerland. The procedure for applying to Switzerland is described in detail here: Becoming an IPBES expert.
Please note that all nominated experts must be available to participate in the corresponding author meetings, with the first author meeting expected to take place at the end of November 2025.
